A. The French Quarter in New Orleans is a lively tourist spot. During the day, tourists can jostle with the crowd on Royal Street and hunt for bargains in the many antique shops and art galleries. In them they can find anything from English furniture to Chinese porcelain to early American bone buttons. Or they can stop in one of the crowded T-Shirt shops on Decatur Street to buy souvenirs. After a morning of shopping, they might want to have a snack or coffee at the Café du Monde. At this noisy sidewalk café, they can sit for hours, listening to a jazz group and watching clowns and mimes entertain laughing children. The art galleries on Royal Street feature both local and international artists. During the evening, the French Quarter comes alive with its best know activity--jazz. B. An Augustinian monk named Gregor Mendel was the first person to make precise observations about the biological process of inheritance. This happened a little over 100 years ago in an Austrian monastery, where Mendel spent his leisure hours performing experiments with pea plants of different types. He crossed them carefully and took notes about the appearance of various traits, or characteristics, in succeeding generations. From his observations, Mendel formed a set of rules, now know as the Medelian Laws of Inheritance, which were found to apply not only to plants bot to animals and human beings as well. This was the beginning of the modern science of genetics.
